An interview with Iceland: Steed Lord on fashion, music, Persian cats

Ed Banger Records [France] may be king of the current Euro-Rave movement but they have their consort: Steed Lord. A fresh group from Iceland turning out high energy music to crunk your ass off and give you fashion cred. They're currently taking the US by storm. Pay attention.

Steed Lord are:
M.E.G.A [emo crunk beatmaker]
Kali [vocal diva extraordinaire]
dEmo [wiz kid producer]
A.C. Banana$ [the banana milkshake MC]
With the homies colourful personalities, fabric flair and Kali's Nordic beauty and outrageous stage persona, Steed Lord are blitzing the scene like a herd of unicorns bolting into a Pollock painting. They're also big on fashion...

TBP: You've all got exceptional fashion sense. Describe your style to someone blind.
SL:  Thank you. We all love fashion and have all worked in that area before. We have major respect for vintage clothing, 80's and 90's sports wear. We are also heavily into respected designers like Bernard Wilhelm, Marjam Pejoski, Henrik Vibskof, Jeremy Scott and Vivienne Westwood. We all have our own style that we blend from our inspirations. We mix street style with high-end designer shit. We are always evolving our taste in fashion and design. We don't ever wanna become played out, we always wanna stay fresh. Also there are some serious sneaker freaks in the band.

TBP: Kali, you particularly have a unique, fresh and stylish diva wardrobe. Who inspires you?
SL:  Old 70's and 80's sci-fi movies, that's my main inspiration. I also adore Diana Ross and the way she used to look like back in the day. Especially when she did the movie Mahogany. Cher is also someone who I love, her style and her voice. I am obsessed with the way she looked in The Sonny and Cher Show back in the 70's when Bob Mackie was designing her wardrobe. I also love Grace Jones, her style is so sexy but still masculine. Debbie Harry is of course a style icon and she's a big inspiration. If I were to pick some stars that are big today, I would have to say Kelis, M.I.A and Roisin Murphy. They all have amazing style are very original.

TBP: Kali, tell us more about your fashion design/styling work. SL: I've been styling for magazines in Iceland and bands and artists for a couple of years now. It's fun and I love being able to style someone other than myself. I don't trust anybody else to dress me. I have also been making clothes for myself and my girlfriends since I was a teenager. I made a little clothing line for a very popular store in Iceland a couple of years ago. The collection was called 'Cocktail' and was one of a kind pieces made out of second-hand clothing. I made a lot of capes, oversized t-shirts and dress and big long scarves and such. It sold out in the store. Then I designed with the guys in the band the H&M clothing line that was in store in 2007. We did that together and it came out amazing. The guys are very talented at designing as well.

TBP: Where did the name STEED LORD come from? SL: The name Steed Lord comes from Kali's and M.E.G.A.'s persian cat. His real name is Prince Elvis but they gave him the nickname 'the mighty steed lord' because he often poses in a very royal steed pose like a statue or a horse. When we were looking for a name for the band Steed Lord was perfect. It means GOD'S HORSE.

TBP: You get over 2000 hits a day on MySpace. How do you see MS helping Steed Lord?
SL:  It's first and foremost a platform for our music! It's how we get exposed to the world. We use myspace to get in touch with our fans, other artists, djs and in the early days promoters even booked us through it. Myspace is the most brilliant website ever built for music! It's the quickest and best way to get your music and art out there and it can build beautiful relationships.

TBP: Do you think MySpace is taking way of A&R  management?
SL: The industry has changed so much by blogs and sites like myspace. It has cut the middleman. Everybody can now listen to your demo or your finished track, not just the labels. We have our manager who handles our contracts and bookings and that's it. We have done it all ourselves. It's all Steed Lord, all day, el' day.
TBP: Who's working on your artwork?
SL: M.E.G.A and A.C are also graphic designers and have done all the Steed Lord artworks and graphics for our band. dEmo also does some graphics. His gifs are crazy and world famous! hahahaha!!! We see our gifs [image animations] all over mspace!!!! People go crazy for that Steed shit!! For our DIRTY MUTHA EP we asked our friends The Zonders [graphic desginers from Frankfurt, Germany] to do the cover artwork for the EP. They did the artwork to our track "Feal The Heat" when it got posted on a blog and we loved it so much we asked them to design the artwork for the EP. We dig their style and they dig ours, plus we wanted to showcase their talent through our music.... it's all about the love baby :)
